10-Day Social Media Fast

I have had a lot of trouble keeping up this blog recently. Not because I’ve gotten bored but because life is so darn busy! Recently, for various reasons, I have switched jobs. I now work at a juice bar, which has actually been a really good switch for me. Oliver is still studying his brains out and we are getting along just fine over here.

October came and went in the blink of an eye didn’t it?? I do love October, for various reasons, but it is my birthday month. (Thank you for all the birthday wishes!!) Oliver spoiled me and I had a great day working. Thus is life as an adult haha.

This October was a particularly special one. Every six months in my church, there is a conference for all of the members and anyone else who wants to listen in. The prophet of the Church lanced a challenge, specifically to the women of the Church (but obviously anyone could do it), to do a 10-day social media fast.

He had previously done this with the youth of the church in the summer. I participated in that one as well and it did me a world of good! But a lot can happen in a few short months, aka falling back into bad habits. Now, this is not about to be one of those social media bashing blog posts. Social media is such a blessing! It is what we make it really. But sometimes we can fall down the rabbit hole and spend a little more time on it than we should. It helps to take breaks, even from good things. And ten days really is not that long in the grand scheme of things.

I also took this challenge a tiny step further for myself. I decided to limit my TV show watching. I, for one, can couch potato with the best of them. For the first few days I didn’t know what to do with myself honestly, but in the end, I found myself reading a lot more! Something I used to do vigorously! (I mean, nerdy vigorously) It has felt so good to stretch my brain and use my imagination.

I would encourage absolutely everyone to try and do a media fast of some kind according to your needs. It really helped me to step back and realize how much empty time I spent on tiny apps on my phone. Life is so much more than that! Just like those little tiny squares, it is what we make it.
